Carnelian is a brownish-red mineral commonly used as a semi-precious gemstone. It is an orange-red variety of chalcedony, a cryptocrystalline quartz mineral. It is translucent to opaque variety of quartz that is usually red, orange or brown. The red variety of chalcedony has been known to be used as beads since the Early Neolithic in Bulgaria. The condition of the sample is good. Age-related wear, fractures and minor cracks may appear. Dirt and dust may exist. Size approx. 5,0cm x 7,6cm x 2,8cm. Weight c. 132g.
