Onyx is a type of chalcedony, which is itself a form of microcrystalline quartz. It is parallel banded silicate mineral and tends to be black with white banding in its most common form. Onyx has long history of use for hardstone carvings and jewelry, where it is usually cut as cabochon or into beads. Onyx was used in Egypt as early as the Second Dynasty to make bowls and other pottery items. Onyx was known to the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Onyx is also mentioned in the Bible many times. The condition of the sample is good. Age-related wear, fractures and minor cracks may appear. Dirt and dust may exist. Size approx. 6,0cm x 5,0cm x 2,5cm. Weight c. 77g.
